Hi, I'm a vegan and I'm new to the group. I'm studying abroad next

semester in Italy and will be living in my apartment. Since I'll be

cooking for myself I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to

things to look for in an italian grocery store, if you would suggest

going to the open air markets, and any other advice that you have to

give, I'm pretty new to this, so any info will help!

Thanks!

I have been to Italy quite a few times and found it quite difficult

to eat out as a vegetarian. You need to be very specific about what

you can and cannot eat. Even after being as specific as I thought

possible, I occasionally discovered parma ham in my food and I guess

I hadn't been clear enough. Being vegan may be easier to get across.

My " Vegetarian Traveller " says that Italy has the highest number of

vegetarians of all the southern European countries. I found 1

vegetarian restaurant in Venice. On the other hand the produce on

sale in markets is fabulous and very fresh. I found 2 websites that

may help as long as you speak Italian!

Italian vegan association:

http://www.viverevegan.org/

Italian Vegetarian Society:

Whereabouts in Italy are you going? To live there for a semester

will be a fabulous experience.

Have fun
