Guest guest
I'm new and wanted to say hello. I'm also new to vegetarianism and I will start with the recipes files, by the way there are some recipes I have to try NOW. What are the best few items to keep on hand? I have canned tomatoes, frozen vegetables, full spice rack. Would beans, rice, pasta be good staples to start with? I was in junk-food-mode for years and I want to change all that. Looking forward to meeting all of you, Tina
Guest guest
Hi Tina, Welcome to this great group (I only joined a few weeks ago myself)! I was a vegetarian living in junk food mode for years, so I totally understand. I've been trying to incorporate more whole grains and vegies into my diet. I started with oats, barley, flax, and rice (and later moved to brown rice) and now I'm adding quinoa, millet and, soon, buckwheat groats. The recommended amount of grains is 3 servings per day. (One slice of whole grain bread or half a cup of cooked grain is about one serving.) Many recipes I've found for grains (including those here) include vegies, legumes and/or fruit. But I do notice that I'm buying more and more ingredients! Particularly new seasonings, Vegennaise (vegan mayo that highly recommended on this board), tempeh, a wider variety of dried beans, Braggs Amino acids (similar to soy, but healthier), dried fruits, agave nectar, xylitol, sucanat, nutritional yeast. On my list today is Tahini (cause I MUST make hummus), and raspberry vinaigrette (for a quinoa salad recipe I want to try). Even though I'm not a vegan, I find I'm eating vegan more often. And my consumption of dairy/cheese/eggs is less. Good luck! Sharon Tina T wrote: > I'm new and wanted to say hello. >
Guest guest
-Welcome Tina, Beans, rice, and pasta are my main staples and I eat one or two of them daily. You will find some easy recipes in the files that are very flavorful and most of these recipes will taste so good because of the combination of herbs and spices. In the future when you discover an herb or spice that you love buy it in bulk and store it in glass jars. Basil and sage are two of my favorites and that is what I do. Also I live on garlic, onions and peppers so always have them on hand. If I don't use fresh I use dried (organic) or grow my own. Have fun. You will like this group they are so helpful and ready to share their tips and recipes with all of us.
