Guest guest
Do you have a big bin going? Mine is not so big. Peace, Diane No, it's pretty small - fits in the pantry... I was told that to have a bigger bin it has to be longer, not taller. WIerd thing, i haven't seen the worms since I put them in the bin Friday... i guess this means they're comfortable, or else theyd be crawling on the walls... Diane, how long does it normally take for you to harvest? I was told to quarter the bein and use a different section every week, and I should be able to start harvesting the first quarter in a month mike my trade lists http://www.geocities.com/realshows
Guest guest
I have 2 - one is a biggish wooden one based on plans from a worm website and the other is 2 10-gallon plastic tubs, 1 inside the other w/ drainage holes in the bottom of the upper bin (I put 4 big rocks in to keep the top bin elevated) and the top bin has air holes all along the rim. The worms are happier in the jury-rigged plastic tubs The tub is filled with paper but I only put food in one half. I harvest the worm tea every month (there's usually about a half inch in the bottom tub) and the castings twice a year, once for spring planting and once for pre-winter nutrition. I got a great book called Worms Eat My Garbage by Mary Appelhof (usually copies at used bookstores). She even has pix & how-to for a tinytiny bin under a cutting board . I think how often/fast you can harvest depends a lot on what you put in. Whole eggshells and corn cobs and avocado skins take longer than a month to disappear but mushy bananas and pulpy stuff go fast. Oh, don't put too much citrus in at once or tomatoes. Too much acid all at once is bad for them. (bad trips? ) They don't hang out on the surface much - are you using shredded paper or ? I don't like the shredded paper but I haven't found a way to switch yet. When I want to peek at them I always have to lift up the top 2 inches or so and there they all are, eating and making baby worms and living a good wormly life Peace, Diane > > No, it's pretty small - fits in the pantry...
