HBO Real Sports had a small piece recently on the battle between

home-schools and public schools. They featured a few families whose children

wanted to be apart of their schools sports teams (one kid in particular

wanted to be on the public school wrestling team). A commission found that

the children could not participate unless the child had a certain amount of

classes (hours) at the public school. As well that if the children were

studying a different curriculum then they shouldn't be apart of the school

teams.

The argument by the parents (who took them to court and if I remembered

correctly won in one of the states) was that the curriculum that they gave

their children was much tougher (and the child said his public school

friends would be amazed because he always had tons more homework then they

did at the public school). The point was also that these featured kids were

making extremely good grades in homeschooling (and better than those that

were on the teams and enrolled in the public schools) and it was as strict

if not more strict academically than public schools (I assume the general

perception of homeschooling is that it is lackadaisical). Another point was

that these parents were paying taxes for public education and didn't even

have their kids enrolled so at the least they should be allowed to

participate on a public school team.

It was a pretty interesting segment and the families had some excellent

points.
