Guest guest
You guys are cracking me up...frugalizing, I love it! And the asian markets...I love those places really, it is a great place to take the kids, the packages are all so entertaining & the kids love guessing what is in them. We do get veggies there & for some reason they are usually reasonably priced. I have to go in the next few days to get moon cakes (yeah, I'm Jewish, but we've and adopted chinese daughter so we do some asian holidays too) - it is always an adventure trying to figure out what we are getting - I try and go with someone who can translate for me! Back to frugalizing...dh and I have been veggie since college, no money then at all and for quite sometime after while we paid loans and had babies...we still are tight financially many months. It is tough & we use coupons and watch sales. Melissa, I was a military brat - I went shopping at the commissary with my mom about 2 years ago and was surprised at the variety of food they had, including veggie options - not lots, but more than I remember as a kid! ANYWAY - Mel, my advice to you would be to plan meals ahead of time and shop for the meals, combined with coupons, that way you don't buy stuff you don't use. A big freezer is helpful cuz you can make big batches (like of marinara - making your own is a huge $ saver as someone mentioned) - cooking your own beans & freezing, etc. Also, I stretch meals by adding starches - ie rice, pasta, potato. Sometimes I do it when I make it, sometimes I just add the starch to the leftovers to make them go further...ie., chili one night, chili with big potato chunks another night..or over rice, etc. I agree with the soup comment - I find that a great way to stretch a budget & served with bread easily makes a meal, you can toss additional potatoes in the following day. Someone mentioned the hydrogeonated (sp) oils...I am cutting out the HFCS & am disgusted at how it is in everything lately, especially the breads & cereals that are on sale...phooey! m
