Attention vegetarians and vegetarian wannabes: It's

not too late to reserve your spot at Tennessee's first

national vegetarian convention, coming soon to

Tennessee's oldest and largest vegetarian community.

Everyone is welcome.

The American Vegan Conference, organized by the

American Vegan Society, will be held at The Farm in

Summertown, Tennessee, August 10-14. Located in the

middle of the state, the conference will be easily

accessible to anyone in Tennessee and surrounding

states.

Featured will be many nationally recognized vegetarian

authorities and authors, plus the opportunity to find

out about The Farm's pioneering work in soy-food

production, nutrition and environmental education.

The Farm was founded in 1971. It is located 75 miles

south of Nashville on Tennessee Highway 20, between US

43 to the east and the Natchez Trace Parkway to the

west. The rustic setting will afford conference

attendees an occasion for back-to-nature relaxation.

" We're fortunate to have such a quality program come

so close to us, " said Lige Weill, president of the

Tennessee Vegetarian Society, headquartered in

Knoxville. " A lot of people are becoming interested in

a more healthful approach to food, and this will be a

great chance to learn from some of the top experts in

the nation. This experience would be especially

helpful for those wanting to improve their diets. "

A Kids' Vegan Summer Program, offered in either a 4-

or 7-day format, will coincide with the adult

conference.

Daily program plans for children and adults are

possible for those unable to attend the whole

conference. Also, scholarships are available for those

who cannot afford the entire conference fee.

Meals included in the conference fee will be prepared

under the direction of Roberta Kachinsky and Ramona

Christopherson, longtime members of The Farm

community, who have been cooking for groups up to

1,000 people for 33 years. Conference organizers say

the meals alone will be worth the trip.

Scheduled conference speakers and some of their

published books include:

Brenda Davis, R.D., Defeating Diabetes, Becoming Vegan

and Dairy-Free & Delicious.

Dr. Alan Goldhamer, The Health Promoting Cookbook and

The Pleasure Trap.

Vesanto Melina, M.S,, R.D., Healthy Eating for Life to

Prevent and Treat Cancer, The New Becoming Vegetarian,

Raising Vegetarian Children, Food Allergy Survival

Guide, Cooking Vegetarian and The Good Cook Book.

Joanne Stepaniak, M.S.Ed., Delicious Food for a

Healthy Heart, Compassionate Living for Healing,

Breaking the Food Seduction, Ecological Cooking, Table

for Two, The Saucy Vegetarian, Vegan Vittles, Vegan

Deli, Being Vegan, The Vegan Sourcebook and The

Ultimate UnCheese Cookbook.

The Kids' Vegan Summer Program runs August 7-14 and

will be lead by Andy Mars, Ph.D. Children ages 7-14

will learn through hands-on activities, making their

own meals and participating in hiking, swimming, music

and other activities.

Lodging choices for conference attendees include

camping, dormitory and other housing at The Farm.

Space for RVs is also available. Fees range from $20

per night for housing to $30 for a campsite for the

four nights of the conference. Motels in nearby

Lawrenceburg, Mt. Pleasant and Columbia are also

available.

Founded in 1960, the American Vegan Society is a

non-profit educational organization based in Malaga,

New Jersey. For more information and registration

assistance, contact the American Vegan Society at
