Guest guest
Finally we have been turkey free when we all get together now for the past 3 yrs. We make stuffing and bake in the oven, vegan gravy, mashed potatoes, zucchini pie, sweet potato casserole, and tons of other dishes. No one even asked about the turkey since they see so many other wonderful platters full. You can't even see the tablecloth since the table is so full. For Christmas dinner and New Years it's usually a potluck at my house and everyone brings a meatfree dish..................Donna budgiegirl2003 <budgiegirl2003 wrote: im sorry to be rude then but I havent yet had a vegetarian thanksgiving and am going to this upcoming year with my non veggie family. I asked a friend whos been veggie a long time and she said she just eats everything else (referring to everything other than a turkey), which makes sense to me. I imagine I would make my own dish or two to contribute, and out of their side dishes make a main dish? Sorry to ask your least favorite question (this goes out to everyone btw) but what do you do at holidays (thanksgiving, christmas, easter, etc)? If I was living alone I dont think it would be a problem but my family eats very traditional holiday meals. , " melissa_hopp " <hoppmel@c...> wrote: > I usually get...not even fish (we live in the Pacific > Northwest)...then what do you eat? > > I tell them fruits and veggies and move onto a different topic...I've > been doing this so long I just am tired of explaining...I love > discussing it when people are interested and want real info, but > otherwise it is old hat. Guest guest
ha ha...your not rude!! We make huge feasts for holidays and when we have non-veggie friends over they are always so amazed there is so much & no meat. My mom likes to whine cuz she loves turkey and always misses it...she stopped coming to our house at Thanksgiving & goes where she can get turkey, which is fine with me, she fusses at the kids anyway (ya sensing a little animosity there?)! Back to the subject... The joy of Thanksgiving is all the winter veggies. I typically do stuffed squash as a main dish & then all the side dishes you would expect. (If you are eating away from home, you will want to know about hidden ingredients such as chicken broth in rice/potatoes/etc.) Sometimes for fancy meals we do a big lentil loaf and gravy and all the " normal " trimmings...there are some great recipes for lentil loaf in the files & at least one real good savory gravy. I also often just do a big fancy stuffings as a main dish, with all the extras it is more than enough...I guess we don't think twice about having all side dishes at a meal...a big plate of stuffing, potato, veggie gravy, veggies...what more do you need...except desert, yum! When I do this, I frequently have a soup starter (a plain one, like squash, lighter pea soup, tomato, etc.). Hope that helps! m
