Guest guest
I looked in the directory. None are close to me. We have a huge farmers market that is set up in a local park on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 7-11am. They have wonderful organic fruits and veggies. Also flowers and many types of grains and beans, I have seen candy, cheese and smoked fish but never meat.. The Calif farmers drive in and set up stands. It's wonderful to shop on both days because there are different items on both days. I have almost never gone where I didn't see a new veggie at the Asian stands. Problem is most people are working on Tuesdays so I miss out on that one. Thank you both for explaining a CSA to me.........................Donna organic_homestead <organic_homestead wrote: Not sure which recipe I'm using; probably #2? It has the liquid smoke in it. The last time I made it I ran out of ketchup, so I used chipotle sauce as the topping. Ohhhhh, it was so good with just the right kick. A CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. People buy " shares " into a farm and then every week they get produce depending on what is ready for harvest. It's a great way to get local foods at a very affordable price. Many times people will go in on a share together depending on how large their family is. I had a single friend who went in with a family of three and he still got a ton of food. Some CSAs are just produce, but many also have eggs, cheese and m**t. Also some CSAs have the opportunity for you to work on the farm; help with planting, harvesting, cleaning up in the fall. See if you can do a search on www.localharvest.org. Although right now I'm having a difficult time getting on their site. You could probably also google " CSA in *name of your state* " I never thought I'd find any here in little ol' Iowa, but I have two within an hour's drive. That's the only one I have made so far but I'm going to try the others soon. You can really change this loaf around too. #2 I believe came from Veronica in the group. How did you make yours? Add anything different? > I know my brother-in-law is not fond of his vegetarian diet my sister put him on.LOL (his cholesterol is raging). He compalins about this and that, and will stop at a lunch truck on the streets for a beef taco but I must say he loves the lentil loaf, some of the posted soups, he's crazy about the spinach soup especially and he craves the olive and potato sandwich I posted. He would never touch brown rice until I gave him a bowl of the brown rice with garlic, peanut butter, and dipping sauce stirred into it like PT suggested, now he loves it. > What is a CSA? Guest guest
I was recently told about a CSA near me in the burbs (Horsham). I am a single person so for me it wouldn't be worth it. And anyway, I am a member of a great co-op, located up the street from me. They get great fresh, local produce as well as cheeses, grains and such. Plus for me it's a great way to be connected with my neighborhood. Membership is $30 a year and you have to work 6 hours per person, in the store or in other ways, including their farm if you desire. It's really a great perk of my area. We also have several farmer's markets nearby, including a huge one at Reading Terminal Market downtown. Guest guest
Shopping at a real farmers market supports the farmer just as much as purchasing via CSA does. :-) Too bad there weren't any near you though - the veggies would just show up once a week at your pickup point! OTOH, shopping for veggies is fun too...
Guest guest
How cool that you could work on the farm! I'd love to do that! :-) There are lots of ways to support small farmers; the biggest way *not* to is to buy most of your veggies at a big chain supermarket (unless you know they get their produce locally)... but in some places that's all you have! But it's good to get the topic out there so more people bcome aware of sustainability (part of which is " local " ). *hugs* Amy
Guest guest
Usually I have worked in the deli for my hours...one of the options they have for this month is to work the phones at the fund drive for the local PBS station. Lidia from PBS will be there and maybe doing demonstrations. But it goes until 11pm on a work night, so I can't do that one. I grew up in a farmy area of NJ. There are a few family farms I know of near my parents' house and during the summer when their stands are open I always make sure to stop in one or two of them before I head back to Philly. There's nothing like *really* supporting the farmers at their actual farms. I was just reading an article about food security: " Farming in Urban Areas Can Boost Food Security Friday June 3, 9:57 am ET Green the Cities Through Agriculture - World Environment Day WASHINGTON and ROME, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- With the world's cities growing rapidly, farming in and around urban areas needs to play a bigger role in feeding city populations, FAO said today, on the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5). Guest guest
We are also members of a co-op and a food buyers club, but what I really enjoy about the CSA's is that the food is absolutely local. I have a single friend who goes in on a share with a family, plus he, himself is a ferocious gardener. His share is the prefect amount and goes great with the things that he grows. For me, I look at joining a CSA as supporting local, organic, sustaining agriculture. Here in Iowa that is quite rare. And although there are wonderful farmers' markets around, I prefer to buy organic produce if I have the choice. I will be checking them out tomorrow, they're still selling asparagus, yum!
