Mike,

Black walnut husks are great for intestinal worms. I know you have the

wiggley kind.

Good for you! I have a couple vermicomposters going. I have a few

suggestions.

*Don't over feed them or it will go anaerobic and kill the worms and smell

bad.

*Keep a good ratio of " brown " (carbon) to " green " nitrogen nutrients. Brown

are things like paper, cardboard but brown leaf litter is probably the best.

Paper from shredding machine is good but tends to mat. Green things are

basically food matter. Worms need the brown for aeration and bedding to lay

their eggs and green is for food.

*Keep it moist but not watery.

*Make sure it is aerated. I saw plans on the net that use a plastic

container. People can usually get the containers at big box stores. They are

about 2 feet long and 18 inches wide and 12 inches deep. The plans I saw called

for using plastic shipping peanuts on the bottom. Do not use the natural ones

or they will mat up as they decompose. You need these for aeration. you can

also use leaf litter on thebottom. Cardboard that is corrugated also works

well. Make aeration holes in the sides and drainage holes in bottom.

www.wormdigest is thbest link I've found. I forgot where I saw the plans for

the worm bin. There are a lot of plans on the net and some are better than

others. The worms create the bioorganism necessary for fertile soil. Later on

use aerated compost tea. The aerated compost tea will exponentially increase

the useful soil organisms. They sell the stuff at landscape supply stores up

here and landscape companies even apply it to the soil as it controls fungus and

increases the bionutrients from the soil.

Good luck and tell us about it.

I got worms!

no, not what you're thinking - I started

vermi-composting yesterday... a great composting

alternative for appartment dwellers

you build a little habitat with red wigglers (the

caddilac of worms(wkrp reference)) and they take care

of the rest

It looks pretty cool - and it's working fine so far..

i'll keep you all updated as to the progress

my girlfriend isn't saying anything, I think she's

waiting for something to go wrong
