Guest guest
My nephew (who just turned 10 last week) has been drinking coffee and cappuccino for a couple years now! I think my brother-in-law has finally cut down the caffeine or lets him have decaf now.. OMG My son (8 1/2) could not believe his eyes the first time he saw his cousin drinking coffee! He's learned about caffeine in school and wants nothing to do with coffee or caffeinated sodas. (every now and then he'll ask for some orange soda or something at a party) He actually came home from school one day and asked " Mom, are you addicted to coffee? " jeez...... ;P My daughter (4 1/2) had cup of tea with my parents at a chinese restaurant... I'm still not really sure how I feel about it... One small teacup isn't a big deal.. I'm more bothered that my parents would even let her have something like that without talking to me about it first... Anyway... I remember trying a sip of my dad's beer when I was.... I don't know between 8 & 10 maybe...? I thought it was just awful. *awful*! I do like the taste now though, so I don't think whether or not you have it as a child dictates how you'll be later. My grandfather would always give the babies in my family a piece of bread soaked in wine saying they wouldn't want to have wine when they grow up. Ridiculous! LOL I didn't allow him to do it with my kids (which raised some eyebrows in my family and bothered my grandfather to say the least). It's certainly different in other cultures though. A friend of mine used herbal teas with her kids when they were toddlers. (not sure if it started younger than that..) Hmmm. another strange thing that comes to mind with this... Growing up I remember " The Great Smoke Out " or something like that in school. You choose a relative or family friend that you know who smokes and give them all sorts of " don't smoke " info and other things to help them quit. I remember choosing an aunt of mine who I rarely saw without a cigarette in her hand. I gave her all the info, told her I loved her and want her healthy, gave her things like gum and whatnot to help her quit (lol) and also gave her candy cigarettes to lighten the blow... Well, 20 years later she's still smoking up a storm. ::but:: The crazy thing is I tried cigarettes when I was 11. I started smoking regularly by 12! By 18 I was smoking 2 pack of camels a day. I tried the no-filter cigarettes but didn't like the part that got " wasted " !!! My parents couldn't get me to stop. Those days you could easily buy them at a store or from a vending machine. They'd throw them out and take my lighters, show me pictures of smoker's lungs, tell me about relatives who have passed from cancer.... I didn't quit until the day took a pregnancy test and found that I was pregnant with my first child. I took my pack (unopened) from my coat pocket and stuck it in the trash.... 9 years later I still get cravings. The smell and everything about it is sickening to me, I think it's more of that " calming " feeling I remember having during and after a smoke that I crave during those times. So... I switched to wine, lots of wine! kidding, kidding!!!!!! ;P Sorry for the ramble. I should start looking for a recipe, eh? ~Kort > Melissa <mapalicka wrote: --- I'm not sure about kids > all hating coffee. A big sip of black espresso, maybe. Guest guest
It seems natural that beer, coffee, bitter or strong foods would be unappealing to kids, whose taste buds haven't been dulled by age, smoking, etc. Maybe the coffee drinking kids have less sensitive taste buds or they just kept trying it and acquired a " taste for it " I thought beer was awful when I tried it at a young age (under parental supervision) and still don't like it...so I don't know where i'm going with this... melissa p
