I gave up meat cold turkey. In fact, it happened when I was 17 and I

told my mother I wanted to become a vegetarian. She snorted and said,

" I wonder how long that will last? " That was 30 years ago. (Note to

self: don't snort at teenage daughters or they will spite you.)

One of my favorite cookbooks over the years has been CabbageTown Cafe.

I never see it mentioned on this list and it's not in our recommended

cookbook list in the files. I wonder, do other people know about this

one? I like it better than the original Moosewood cookbook. In fact,

just last week I made Refried Beans out of that cookbook. Really

tasty. It's full of yummy soup recipes and I plan to use their fried

tempeh in mock hoison sauce recipe this week as I try tempeh for the

first time.

I just ordered her newer cookbook. (I'm only returning to cooking after

years, so I missed A Taste of Julie Jordan when it came out several

years ago.) Prior to CabbageTown Cafe, she wrote a book called Wings of

Life. I'm wondering, does anyone have that cookbook and what do you

think of it?

P.S. Yesterday I was in the mood for bean salad recipes. I made the

Brown Rice Tabouleh recipe from this list again, but this time I used

barley. It's a great recipe - perfectly seasoned! I plan to even try

it with bulgar. :-) I also made the Bean-Wah Salad recipe posted here:

http://www.wholegrainscouncil.org/recipesQuinoa.htm

and the Barley Bean and Corn Salad posted here:

http://www.barleyfoods.org/recipes/barleybeancorn_salad.html

I haven't had quinoa in years, because I didn't really like it last

time. I'm still not sure about it. An early taste of the salad was ok,

but I let all of them sit in the fridge so they'll be really ready to

eat today.

You guys are really helping me push the envelope. I just bought, for

the first time ever, Soyriso (not sure I have that right), tempeh,

Nutritional yeast flakes, Vegenaise, Agave Nectar, and a Champagne

mango. :-)
