Ok, seriously, the whole hair/chicken finger thing is pretty dang

disgusting! Ignorance truly is bliss I suppose.

When my 3rd and 4th children started having issues w/ food allergies we

became avid label readers and had to research the ingredients at all our

favorite fast food places and restaruants. I was/am amazed at what is

actually in all that food!

Just the other day my ds wanted to eat a frozen dinner I had in freezer

(he's not vegetarian) and it was a Michelena's (sp) swedish meatball entree

w/ some noodles - my other ds wanted a bite (he's allergic to milk) so I

checked the ingredients and I wasn't surprised to find milk, BUT I was

surprised to find anchovies listed in the ingredients! Ewww!

We're mostly lacto-ovo (or ovo-lacto whatever) although we fall off the

wagon on occassion (we're seriously working on it!!!!!), although I do have

2 kids who are allergic to milk (more ice cream for me, lol) -- anyhow,

point is, I am continually surprised at home many products have animal

derived ingredients in them! I have learned so much from this group about

ingredients I had no clue were animal derived! It's given me a whole new

sense of awareness, and we're working toward eliminating all animal

products, although that will take some time. I'm not in a position to throw

out all the food in my pantry and freezer, but we're getting there.

We've also been working on making sure the products we use are " safe " , I

already posted about how we use vinegar for most things, but I want to make

sure makeup, shampoo, etc are not tested on animals. The other day I was

standing in front of the washing machine loading it and I noticed that on

the box of Sun powdered detergent I use for the baby's cloth diapers it

says, " This finished product is not tested on animals " -- so, of course, you

have to read what they're not saying and wonder, " So does that mean that the

NON-finished product is tested on animals, are the individual ingredients

tested on animals??? "

Speaking of fast food, our friday night ritual is Little Ceasars. w/ our 2

youngest being allergic to dairy, we always get pizza from them. Their

crust is dairy and egg free and they have wonderful customer service. My

youngest had been having some issues and we weren't sure what he was

reacting too, so I emailed Little Ceasars just to verify again that there

was no soy in their pizza dough (he worst allergy) in case they had changed

their recipe. Anyhow, I emailed them Thursday morning around 9 am, at

around 2pm that same day I got a call from a rep b/c she had gotten my email

and she wanted to call me right away to let me know the dough was made from

flour and soybean oil! It was funny b/c she was a bit worried, but I let

her know that soybean oil doesn't have soy protein in it so it's safe for

the majority of soy allergic people. Point being, I was really impressed w/

their customer service and that they do have a vegetarian pizza (ordered w/o

cheese of course, which is what we do for the little 2).

Ok, at this point I'm pretty much rambling b/c baby was up late last night.

Hopefully I've managed to make some sense, lol.
