Debra,

I don't think that selling out to a big company in and of itself is bad.

Bigness does not equal badness. The bad part is that almost all of those

companies do not share the same values. I don't remember all the companies that

bought out the small companies. I do remember Kraft being one. It does seem

incongruous that Kraft basically produces crap and now they want us to buy their

healthy product. They just use those products to increase their health image

and health food products have a much bigger profit margin than other products.

It is one of the fastest growing segments of the food industry. I think that

Ben and Jerry did have second thoughts on selling their company. I would not

call their products health food by any means but they do have a lot of

integrity. There are some big companies that have progressive values. Costco

and Cisco Systems are some companies that come to mind although they are not

food companies. One of my sister works at one of those

big companies - General Mills.

One reason they actually sell is to take the money and do something else with

their lives. Spend more time with their families, go on extended vacation,

start a new business venture. Another reason is to obtain more capital from the

larger firm. Another is to get bigger market share or bigger and better

distribution (Kraft). Sometimes they do it to get better management from the

larger company.

If their values do not mesh, I would call it selling out though.

I have a question. Why do all these small health conscience,

community consience companies sell out to big business?
