question about pinto beans

I have a silly question about cooking pintos. Mine always come out a

really nasty, gray color and my kids think I did something

wrong 'cause they don't look like the pretty reddish-pink/brown beans

in a can. Is there something I can do to retain their color? or do

food manuf. use food coloring? My kids eat canned beans no problem but

homemade...not so much. Thanks for any help!
