Kind of an interesting bird, isn't it? ~ Emu are amazing creatures. They seem very intelligent. My cat, Fiona, used to love to go for rides in our car with us until we drove past an emu farm and she saw how huge those birds are! *lol* Gave her a whole new perspective on the birds she stalks around our yard. They called the wildlife extention to find out how to care for her and they offered $20 a lb for her to kill her for oil. They said " no way! " Big Bird would sleep with her head in Chris' lap when Chris would sit on the deck...the elevated deck made her lap just the right height! ~ Good for your friends. That is a great story. Do they still care for the emu? ~ pt ~ The true man sings gladly in the bright day, sings loudly of May - fair-aspected season. ~ John Matthews, " From the Isles of Dream "

Chris is an internationally known peace activist and an outspoken advocate against fishing (sport fishing is very popular where they live). Unfortunately, Big Bird broke out of her corral one night and disappeared. They hope that she is still living on their preserve and will return. They have a farmed patch of land where they grow crops for the wildlife to eat so hopefully she is well fed and simply enjoying the sanctuary. You can see Big Bird's pic on their website: http://www.shoalsanctuary.com/ They also have rescue turkeys and chickens who they keep as companions.
