Been a lurker here, but I thought I'd contribute my 2 cents.

I said the same thing with my wedding. And everyone said the same thing to

me. But I stood my ground. I even said, anyone who won't eat vegetarian

food for a day on one of the most important days of my life can stay

home. (I was very young when I got married.) Since the rents were paying

for it, I had to convince them, so I think I said something like, " You can

serve meat to the guests if you want, but I won't be there. I'm not going

to have my wedding day be a celebration of carnage. " (Again, young and

pushing ultimatums.)

So, we told my side of the family that it would be vegetarian and didn't

mention it to his side of the family. His side didn't even notice! When

they were told afterward, most people said stuff like, " Oh, well if that's

what vegetarian food tastes like, I guess I could eat vegetarian food on

occassion. " It was a specialty pasta dish (and yummy at that!). On my

side, a couple of people refused to eat " rabbit food, " but the irony was

that what I served was actually their all-time favorite meal, they just

didn't realize that their all-time favorite meal had no meat in it.

So, I totally support you in hosting a veg party, but from my experience,

you might not want to mention it until AFTERWARD. *laugh* It's not like

you're feeding them something that they don't eat or won't eat.

Best of luck with your party, and, Happy 50th!
