Guest guest
From the regular size adult cow you can make 6½ footballs. It is a rule in the NFL that the home team must provide 27 footballs for every home game. Using those numbers you would need 4.15 cows for every home game to get enough footballs. There are 31 teams in the NFL and they all play 8 home games during the course of the season. That means there are 248 home games during the year. If you take 248 and multiply it with 4.15 you should get the number of cows needed, 1029.2. Yes, just over 1000 cows are needed to supply the NFL with enough game balls every year. " On the udder hand, at cowsarecool.com, a web site created by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the largest animal rights organization in the world, it's claimed that " it takes the leather of 3.8 steers to make the 72 footballs used in every... NFL SuperBowl; it takes 3,000 cows to supply the NFL with enough leather for a year's supply of footballs. " PETA does not explain how they arrived at that figure, and they appear to be over-estimating the number of footballs needed by the NFL in a year. So, we have to decide who knows more about how many footballs are needed - animal rights activists or a sports writer? Update: Eye-on-the-ball reader John Beamish reports the current rule requires more cows. The home team must now provide 36 balls for outdoor games and 24 for indoor games. So, assuming our udder formulas are still correct, the NFL is supported by 2,480 cows. Which is a lot of cows.
Guest guest
Oh, man!! I never, ever thought of this. I'm wondering why they need 8 a game, and hoping they can reuse the unused ones! What a waste. I'm disgusted!! Please tell me soccer balls aren't made of cows... m
