You can use the root/bulb in casseroles and soups. I've seen a casserole here: <http://sidedish.allrecipes.com/az/62595.asp> (beware evil pop-ups.) and here: <http://www.ivu.org/recipes/soup/creamy-fennel.html> but I haven't actually tried them. The leaves can be used too. Anyway, what my point is, is that I think it is all one and the same plant. It is just different parts of the plant used for different things. Maybe I just didn't understand.
