Investigation Reveals Shocking Cruelty

Following a seven-week undercover investigation conducted between July 22

and September 12, 2004, PETA released shocking video footage of fully

conscious

cows writhing in agony as they are mutilated at Postville, Iowa-based

AgriProcessors, Inc., the largest glatt kosher slaughterhouse in the

world. PETA

has filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture

(USDA),

calling on the agency to prosecute the plant for violations of the

federal

Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter Act.

PETA’s video shows workers at AgriProcessors shocking cows in the face

with

electric prods, ripping their tracheas out of their throats while they

are

still conscious, and then dumping the animals onto a concrete floor,

where

they stumble and try to get up as blood pours from their throats. Many

are

still conscious, as evidenced by their cries, when they are hoisted by

one leg

and moved to another chamber to be decapitated. Many more details can be

viewed

at our PETA.org Web site. If you know people who thought that the

cruelty

PETA exposed at the KFC supplier Pilgrim’s Pride was an aberration,

please be

sure to send them to our Web site.

It is important to remember that kosher slaughterhouses are doubly

inspected, i.e., they are inspected both by the USDA and by kosher

authorities, and

both are supposed to be cracking down on this sort of cruelty. What

this

proves beyond a shadow of doubt is that eating meat supports cruelty.

It may interest you to know that we tried to work quietly with this

place,

as we always do, and were summarily rebuffed by the plant€™s high-power

attorney, who wrote, “Kosher slaughter is being conducted in

accordance with the

letter and spirit of Jewish law, which prescribes the most humane

treatment of

animals that has been known throughout human history.â€

Apparently not. We showed our video to some of Judaism’s preeminent

kosher

scholars. The eminent chief rabbi of Haifa, Israel, Shear-Yashuv Cohen,

condemned the actions as “definitely unacceptable by halachic

standards.†Rabbi

David Rosen, a director at the American Jewish Committee and the former

chief

rabbi of Ireland, called the abuse a “flagrant violation of Jewish

halachic

(religious legal) requirements.†Rabbi Barry Schwartz, who sits on the

Central

Conference of American Rabbis’ Task Force on Kashrut, asserts, 'The

suffering of these animals during slaughter is sickening. Death is

neither quick nor

merciful.'

The difficult place that the U.S. is in can not be diminished by waging

more wars. The violence done in our name generates more violence

and hatred against us. The solution arises from changing our attitudes

about other people. We need to stop the theft of their resources and

labor and begin to treat others with respect and dignity. RossCannon

The inhumane practice of these " factories " is really

disgusting. Eating meat is one thing but allowing this

method of " processing " is just outrageous.
