Guest guest
I've been a lacto/ovo vegetarian since I left home at 19, for the simple reason that I disliked all meat and seafood except for bacon/pork/ham - the sort of meat one should give up first for health reasons! The finishing off point was a holiday job working in a sausage factory - 5 weeks there and I never ate meat again! I'm 53, so that makes it 34 years now. My husband eats meat when he's out (because he's too lazy to organise and cook his own meat at home!). We have 4 sons who have been brought up vegetarian, but who have been allowed to make their own choices after about the age of 10. The oldest, 23, now loves meat, and #3 (17) eats it a bit - these are my 2 sociable kids, the ones who are most peer oriented. The 21yo and the 14yo both find the very idea morally repugnant. I'm always on the look out for new recipes. At the moment I'm particularly interested in slow cooker recipies that don't involve chilli or the like. My eldest son worked as a beekeeper for a while. Here in New Zealand, at least, bees are not killed deliberately in beekeeping, but casualties are unavoidable. A bee dies if it stings, and of course many will die defending their hive from the theft of the honey, despite the smoking. The honey is their winter food supply, and although keepers never take it all, they don't leave enough so the bees are fed sugar water through winter.
