I'm new...

Hi everyone! I'm new here, just wanted to introduce myself - I am 22

years old, I live in Australia, and have been a vegetarian for more

than 6 years now. I'm Hindu, so I never ate beef or pork ever in my

life anyway, but at the age of 16 I decided to quit eating meat (and

fish and poultry!). My mom and sister had already quit before me, so

my dad and I quit together. I quit due to many reasons:

vegetarianism is healthier, uncruel, and is often recommended for

people following a spiritual/meditative path in their lives. Soon

after I quit, I started to read this book called " Diet for a New

America " , which I didn't finish (I found it traumatising) but really

hammers home the fact of how animals who are to be slaughtered are

treated! The author of the book was the heir to the 'Baskin Robbins'

ice-cream throne, but he refused to inherit the company due to the

fact that the cows where the milk comes from to make the ice-cream

are treated horribly and live in inhumane (or would that be

inbovine?!) conditions. I found this very inspiring (unfortunately I

still have dairy in my food - but I try to take soy substitutes when

I can). Anyway, just thought I would let you know what I was sort of

about, and hope that we can all have a wonderful time sharing ideas

and recipes with a clear conscience that we have hurt nothing and

noone!

In peace,

darquesal

I agree. Fantastic introduction. I want (and need) to read that book now!

Speaking of America's lovely food habits, has anyone seen Super Size Me yet?

I plan to rent it post party jitters.
