Guest guest
Due to increasing cost of living, tuition and gas, I'm living in my car during the semester and living as low-cost as I can. One of the ways that I have been saving on food costs is going to the school restaraunts at 8:30 when they're closing, and see if they have any food left over that the health code requires them to throw out, but is still good. I've not gone hungry a single night yet. Anyways, the reason for this post is that I found out that the Subway has to throw out all their veggies and bread at the end of the day! Lucky me, I get a free foot long veggie lover's sub each night (and the workers have even been putting the sauces and such on). A friend of mine told me " Beggers can't be choosers " , implying that eating meat is better than starving, but in this instance, beggers CAN be choosers! Guest guest
Dear Kevin, You've got mad courage, relaying the facts on living poor.... I read the collected anthology of " the Oracle " (a San Fran/Haight-Ashbury zine which became a bible of sorts for the counterculture), and in the end, after searching the whole damn thing---years worth of editions---I realized that there was little or no practical data on how to live poor.... What I distilled from the articles was a few tips---mostly sounding like your own learning experiences---which amounted, in short, to: " find what you can that's free/be most efficient with what you have " .... My girl and I live in abject poverty(under $750 a month for both of us---yet we still feed a big dog we live with), on solar power(a genny when we lack sun), carrying in our own h20, burying the waste from a porta-potty(tough for her to use in winter and at night) every few weeks, and manage to be loving/contented through this rough lifestyle.... Being that you're a student, I have to pass on some painful reflections I have had re: college...with two degrees(film/theatre)/five universities under my belt[i'm possibly being redundant, as I've cited some of my gripes on another Y-group(Stoner Times)], I need to reiterate that I question the value of any higher education that pursues liberal arts, without gunning for a teaching-credential simultaneously.... Consider poverty an unpleasant alternative...prepare for the worst...what may seem bearable for now can become trying over the years.... If you are studying a hard science, or engineering, or something along those lines, disregard my warnings.... Guest guest
Thanks for the warnings, but I'm pursuing a bachelor of science in Electrical Engineering. . .which according to the Bureau of labor statistics averages $49,794 STARTING salary with a Bachelor's (http://www.bls.gov/oco/pdf/ocos031.pdf). The reason I'm living like this now is so I won't have to live like this later on Thank you for your advice though, I always appreciate input. Guest guest
I've always wanted to go to London, it's 3rd on my list after Mainland China and Australia/New Zealand. <elaine.saunders1@n...> wrote: > what a cool site, and what a cool guy you are, very impressed indeed > you would fit in with a lot of the culture in London, we have quite a > community over here, nice to see that there are still free spirits among us. Guest guest
china is number one on my list as well, i have always wanted to visit there, the culture fascinates me totally, one of my friends went travelling and he went to new Zealand and he did a sky dive over where they filmed lord of the rings and he said it was amazing!!!!!!!!!! parts of England are pretty cool, not all though, our inner cities have their serious problems, London is cool though, and we have some absolutely stunning places, there is a big bohemian culture if you know where to find it, i am a reiki healer so we have a very strong community and i am part of a hippy ideal if that's what one would want to call an alternative life style. love and light elaine - " Kevin Smith " <thatballguy Saturday, September 18, 2004 11:42 PM Re: Beggers can't be choosers. . . . > > I've always wanted to go to London, it's 3rd on my list after Mainland > China and Australia/New Zealand. > > <elaine.saunders1@n...> wrote: > > what a cool site, and what a cool guy you are, very impressed indeed > > you would fit in with a lot of the culture in London, we have quite a > > community over here, nice to see that there are still free spirits > among us. Guest guest
your take on religion is fascinating.i believe there is one god who has many names....... Krishna, Allah, Buddha, all rivers lead to the same sea, but we make a choice to bathe, or to go unwashed. - " Kevin Smith " <thatballguy Sunday, September 19, 2004 1:43 AM Re: Beggers can't be choosers. . . . > Ni hiu shuo Putonguama? > > , " elaine.saunders1 " > <elaine.saunders1@n...> wrote: > > china is number one on my list as well, i have always wanted to > visit there, > > the culture fascinates me totally. . . . > > > > > >
