Guest guest
Ooh! You have nice equipment! I am in envy. :-) Seriously! We lost a close family friend this year to bad health he was 51 so I kicked it up a notch. I also was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease -most common thyroid condition so I figured this was my year to kick in gear I invested in myself. I use therapy bands that someone gave me and I " pump water " (as opposed to pumping iron) by using 4-pound jugs of water as handweights. I'm very " low-tech " right now, but I am in total envy of your new treadmill! these sound interesting. I think that can be one of the biggest wake-up calls! I see the results of bad diet and lack of exercise every day as my husband is very stubborn about not changing his diet and he can't exercise anymore because of his chronic illnesses (which are genetic and life-long so there's no talking to him there, either.) Taking care of the chronically ill can certainly be a great inspiration for practicing good nutrition and exercise one's self! Totally agree. I'm so glad you're here, Linda! I think I will learn a lot from you. Welcome! Sparrow Thank you so much I am glad I am here too!

LOL The therapy bands are just giant rubber bands that are probably similar to the resistance bands on your pilates equipment. Some of the workout DVDs I use (I even save money there as I rent them from Netflix before I decide if I want to buy them or not so I never end up stuck with a " dud. " ) use the therapy bands for upper body workouts by anchoring the band around the waist and pushing the arms in different directions. The water jugs were my own innovation after I remembered my mother teaching me as a child: " a pint's a pound, the world around. " My husband likes to eat salsa that comes in 2 quart containers and I thought, " hey! if a pint's a pound, a quart is two pounds and those jugs should be four pounds when full of water! " so I washed them out and I can vary their weight by how much water I put in. I have a couple of workout DVDs that call for hand weights and I was just doing the movements without weights (which did cause some improvement in my body since I started out so out of shape!) until I figured out the jugs. They get a little awkward for the move where you raise your arms straight up, then bend your elbows so your hands are behind your head and move your hand up and down (great for tightening up the underneath part of the arm that gets flabby so quickly and wobbles when it hangs down.) But for all the other moves like shoulder shrugs or curls or tricep kickbacks (also good for the wobbly underparts) they work like a dream. And when I saw that a set of handweights in 1, 2, and 5 pound sizes cost $25, I knew my creativity had saved a *LOT* of money because my set of handweights only cost $3 and came with a gallon of salsa. :-) If I outgrow the four pound jugs, I have seen gallon jugs of apple juice with good handles (standard gallon milk/water jugs aren't very comfortable in my hands) and a gallon is eight pounds. Hopefully, by the time I outgrow eight pounds I will be into my grad fellowship and have more money for buying workout supplies. :-) Now I have to go negotiate with my living room. If I can figure out how to get just two more feet of workout space, I can try doing the NYC ballet workout. Emphasis on TRY, since this is supposed to be the actual workout that the NYC ballet troupe does and it's maked as intermediate/advanced, so I may be shooting way, way, way over my head with this one. LOL But I'm still going to give it a try. That's what's great about rentals! I'm not stuck with it if I can't do it. Sparrow
