The freakin' holidays and work

For the last decade I worked as a telecommuter. One of the great

advantages for me was around this time of year I didn't pass all those

tempting treats.

This is my first year back in an office environment. I had been so in

control, doing so well.

Everywhere, they put out various cookies, high end chocolates, every

possible temptation that would command my attention, first whisper me,

gently, " Just a little taste " . The whisper became a chorus,

the many small little tastes add up. A half of that small piece

with the nuts covered with chocolate.

A return to get that other little half.

Even though I keep hitting the trail and the gym, I get stronger, the

scale taunts me, " so you like a little chocolate " , a bit at a time.

More weights are getting piled on the machines. But that's never a

compensation!

I had the solution, incredible Asian Pears! They are my favorite

fruit, and I planned a trip to the farmer's market where a guy sells

his Asian Pears. I bought a big bag, took a festive plate, and put

them out. Here world, here my coworkers and friends, something

delicious, healthy, wonderful for you.

I tried talking to my friend in the next cube, extolling the virtues

of Asian Pears and the temptations of chocolates. After

a while he said, I know you're talking, but all I hear is " mumble

mumble stuff, chocolate, mumble, stuff, mumble, chocolate "

Alas, no one ate from my plate of Asian pears.

Good for you Bob. You keep bringing in those yummy pears and making that

statement. Luckily my office is very supportive, and small, and the temptations

are few yet I've been in the situation you describe in the past. It is very

tough to be in a large work environment during this time of year especially when

you're watching what you're eating and trying to do better for yourself.

I wish you strength!

Hi Ya Bob!

Wellllllllllllllllll, is it that you really want others to partake in those

Asian Pears?????? Because, if that really is the case there is something that

you could do. Next to the pears set one of the bottles of fat free (obviously

NOT calorie free) caramel sauce. They can dip a slice of pear in the caramel. At

least that way you can control and limit the extra sugar and calories and others

will accept it as a true holiday treat. No matter how you look at it, it's got

to be healthier than shortbread dipped in chocolate (my SIL's favorite) or 3 " x3 "

slabs of fudge.

Well, Bob, at least the Asian pears are there for you, when you want a

sweet (though those See's candies are nearly impossible to resist!).

I got each of the coworkers in my department a soy candle for the

holidays. They're really having a ball making fun of the idea of a soy

candle, adding " Oh yeah, we forgot, she's the vegetarian who wouldn't

eat the ham or fried chicken at the Christmas lunch. "

'Tis the season...

I'm with you, Bob...while I dearly love as dark as I can get it chocolate, I'd

flip out over a nice ripe piece of fruit - especially Asian Pears!  Bravo for

your efforts, however ignored they were.

Produce in North Texas has been so bad lately, I've had to resort to jarred

fruits and frozen veggies.  BLECH!

Happy Holidays:)
