Guest guest
Jen, I've been a veggie for around 35 years and vegan for 30 ish with a few compromises now and then. My wife is omnivore although cos I do all the cooking and won't be an acoomplise to murder, she ends up being a de-facto veggie until her parents bring her food or we go to their house. All they offer me is beans and chips (UK chips = fries anywhere else I think) or beans on toast - that started 30 years ago. I think they assumed I'd be fed up and give up, but my ethics are a little stronger than that - and I love beans! Hah! My wife agreed to let our kids be lactoveg from birth so they can have the choice of being lifelong veggies when they get older. now they are both mid 20s and are still veggie by choice. As you say it can be tricky when social eating in restaurants etc though there seems to be an increasing amount of both veggie and vegan meals these days. But I've had to compromise and share a cheese & tomato pizza now and then. At home I make my own base and toppings - toppings with a very thick tomato puree then mixed finely chopped nuts & seeds (I use a coffee grinder kept specially for nuts and seeds), mushrooms, olives, along with oregano and marjoram. But like a cheese and tomato pizza it isn't low calorie is it? Good to hear you are exercising, Jem. I'm a writer, so I spend a lot of time sitting in front of the 'puter. But when I get fidgety I leap on my bicycle and hurl it up the nearby Welsh hills - great! Nearly all the cookery crookery TV programs create their succulent dishes with huge quantities of cream, alcohol, sugar - and never mention the calorie punishment for eating them! Is that the same in the USA? Geoff
