But it poses a special problem for those whose diets rely on a number of carbohydrates — pastas, vegetables, fruits and beans. Does a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, the adult-onset and most common type of the disease, mean that vegetarians must give up these foods? .... No longer are there " good foods " and " bad foods. " All foods can fit into a healthy diet for those with or without diabetes. The healthy foods your family eat are also healthy for you, the vegetarian. .... The American Diabetes Association states, " Scientific data suggest positive relationships between a vegetarian diet and reduced risk for several chronic degenerative diseases and conditions, including obesity, coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and some types of cancer. " So eating a healthy vegetarian diet will probably be better for you in the long run. If you are a vegan, an excellent recipe book is Vegan Menu for People with Diabetes, written by Nancy Berkoff, a registered dietitian, and published in 2004.
