Cooking Grains in the Microwave

Since Kathleen posted those recipes for bulghur and

millet, I thought I would pass on something that makes

cooking grains so much quicker - the microwave.

I use my Pampered Chef microwave cooker and I do it in

there. I put in 3/4 cup of millet or quinoa and 1-1/2

cups of water or broth. Put it on HIGH in the

microwave for 20 minutes and it is cooked thoroughly.

For bulghur, I put the bulghur in the cooker but I

don't do the actual cooking in the microwave. I put 1

cup of bulghur in the cooker, cover it with boiling

water (about 3 cups of water) and then put the cover

on. After 20 minutes, I remove the cover to see if the

water has been absorbed. If not, I cover it again and

let it sit for a few minutes. I taste a grain. If it

is cooked, I put the cover on (it has drain holes in

it) and I drain it. Love the cover to that microwave

cooker.

For rice, I put 1 cup of rice in the cooker. Then I

cover with 2 cups of water. I cook on HIGH for 5

minutes and then on MED for 12-14 minutes. If you cook

it on HIGH for the whole time, then it splashes water

and stuff all over the microwave oven.

Anyway, if you hate the long cooking time when you

boil grains on the stovetop, then try the microwave.

Makes it much quicker.
