Place the potatoes in a colander and squeeze out the excess liquid. In a large mixing bowl, combine the potatoes with all of the remaining ingredients (except the cheese) and mix well. Spoon the mixture into a 9 x13-inch oiled casserole or pan. Bake until the crust is lightly browned, about 45 minutes. Sprinkle the cheese over the top and cover. Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
