SPROUTER: Before commencing, either purchase a commercial sprouter from a local

health-food store or acquire a wicker basket, a plastic colander, a sieve or a

flower pot.

ADVICE: Beginners should start by sprouting seeds that are easy to produce and

need minimum attention.

Here are five simple steps to creating an indoor sprout garden.

1. Soak the seeds of choice overnight in plenty of water.

2. Drain and rinse the seeds well and place a thin layer of them in the base of

the sprouter. If the holes in the bottom of the sprouter are too large, line it

with a sheet of muslin or cheesecloth, to prevent the seeds from falling

through.

3. Leave the sprouter in the kitchen, away from direct sunlight.

4. Rinse the seeds two to three times a day, for about 30 seconds at a time.

This helps wash away debris given off by the chemical processes during

germination and provides the sprouts with a fresh supply of water. Always drain

them well or they can begin to rot. But do not allow them to dry out.

5. Continue to rinse until ready to harvest. See the list above for correct

gathering times. Then give them one final wash, remove them from the sprouter

and store them in the fridge. Mature sprouts are best eaten within one week.

NOTES : Germinating sprouts is fun to do, requiring no soil or fertilizer. All

that is needed is some seeds, an apparatus to grow them in, filtered water and a

little care.
