I am a librarian, not an attorney. It is my understanding that recipes

cannot be copyrighted because they are formulas and because it would be

difficult for any cookbook author to prove that his/her recipe is

original. The notes are copyrightable, but a certain amount can be shared

as long as they are attributed to the author.

 

Copyright law is complex and the digital world has made it more complex.

 

There used to be a url on the fatfree website that pointed to an article in

the San Jose Mercury that explained copyright and recipes, but the the last

time I looked it was not longer there. The above comes from my memory of

that article and from other discussions on the internet.
