Guest guest
My name is Racheal and I haven't been a vegan for very long but my husband has and now our 3 year old son is also. We recieve WIC coupons each month to help us out with diffrent things. I noticed that with the milk products that they dont have soy milk available. I went to my local WIC department that said I would have to call the federal agency about the situation. I asked the lady why she thought they wouldn't accept it, and she said because of the identity of soy milk, whatever that means, and I said well why do they give infants soy formula but not offer soy milk. She said " Babys would die without formula or breast milk, children dont need milk to survive. " Well I called the Federal WIC Corp and spoke to the nutritionalist there about the situation. I told her that I was a vegan and my family and that we think soy milk should be given on WIC. She agreed with everything that I said and said that " Currently soy products do not meet the needs or the program " I said what needs? She couldn't tell me. I think this is something that needs to be changed. The nutiritional value in soy milk is great compared to cows milk. If anyone cared to read this thank you. I just wanted to express my feelings toward the matter. THANKS!! Racheal
Guest guest
Its because WIC is funded/supplemented by the meat and dairy industries. The 'needs' of the program is to encourage eating meat and dairy not to help poorer families eat healthier. Well, it's not funny, especially to this family! I'll bet the SOY LOBBY would love to get in on this!
Guest guest
We went through something similar, when my son was a baby. We were vegetarians at the time, but we were on WIC after we knew for sure that he had a cow milk protein allergy. We were able to get soy formula (we supplemented a little in cereal, but otherwise he nursed). When he was old enough for 'milk and cheese' we really didn't get anything from them other than the formula. I asked about soymilk before, and pretty much got the same thing - it was not part of their program which I thought was entirely stupid, since there are so many children with dairy allergies. We could not use the milk or the eggs (they changed our tickets to 'lactose free' but he still couldn't have it because of the protiens). I used to be in tears all the time, as we really needed the help at the time (my husband went through 3 layoffs in my son's first year of life and he was not making anywhere near what he is now. It was dreadful.) They really do need to change what they give in the program. I am glad it is there to help out, but when you don't fit into their neat little boxes they serve very little purpose. At least that was the case for us, and we had medical reason, and a substitute was not available. I couldn't imagine someone with a dairy and peanut and fish allergy having to be on WIC. It needs a serious overhaul, not only for the reasons you state, but for the rise of food allergies in children.
