Guest guest
I don't have the previous posts regarding this topic but I just had a conversation with the director of Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary in MD about the source of veal. It is often overlooked that the females are often used for veal. A farmer does not use the newborn females for dairy unless they need to replace a dairy cow that is not producing enough milk. If they did use every female calf they would have more cows than they could manage. Even if a female was born 50% of the time, there would be a large increase of cows every year. So I was also informed that females calves are used for veal. And, possibly other things. Sorry if this topic was already wrapped up. I just was surprised when I learned this since I had never heard it before or thought about it but it makes sense. Don't know why the focus has just been on males, not that it makes it any more important, whether it's a female or male calf. Guest guest
Yes, this is correct. When I was a volunteer at Poplar Spring we had at least one young female calf who fell off a veal truck which we rescued. It isn't just the males, if they have surplus females they will send them off for veal too.
