Guest guest
okay, I need some help here. As a child I was fed mostly frozen and canned produce. But I am trying to use more fresh produce for my children. But I order most of my produce from an organic co-op and I am just getting grossed out. I try to order broccoli and cauliflower, but often it comes loaded with these little bugs, sometimes black sometimes green or grey. I soak to food, shake it under water and they just keep floating up so the food ends up in the compost, because I can't eat it. Am I just being too squeamish? Is this normal (the bugs I mean). Should I just get these foods elsewhere? They are much cheaper through the coop when I can eat them. Any help on this would be useful. Guest guest
Bugs on produce is definitely normal. They were always in our brussels sprouts when we grew them at my parents' house. After you soak them, put them in the freezer for a day or two. Then thaw them out and soak them again. That always got them all out for us. If you can't eat them even after all that, it'd be more practical to buy them somewhere else if you'll just toss them otherwise. Laura <lballinger wrote: okay, I need some help here. Guest guest
As a kid I had to pick the food that I ate out of the garden. I don't remember bugs ever being in anything of what we picked. Maybe in shucked corn or something but we threw that away as bad. They should pick the food (remove any bugs crawling on it if there are any) and put it in a clean bucket. I don't think there should be bugs in the food that they are selling you. Renee Laura <lballinger wrote: okay, I need some help here. As a child I was fed mostly frozen and canned produce.
