OHMYGOSH!

That is hilarious!! We have two boys and one daughter. I work with La

Leche League and meet dozens and dozens of moms a month. Many of them are

veggie families and there are LOTS of boys.

Smile when you see this person and remember it when she/he gives future

*advice*.

that is by far one of the silliest arguments against vegetarianism i have

ever heard. i was a student midwife for three years and saw many a veggie

mama pass my way having a boy. i am vegan and have a boy and a girl.

whether or not a baby will be a boy or a girl is determined by the father's

sperm - not by what you're eating.

Hi Jeni,

As far as I know, the gender of a baby is determined not by diet but by the x

and y chromosomes. I have two healthy boys and I was vegan before I got

pregnant, through my pregnancy, and still am - as are my children. A number of

my friends who are vegan/vegetarian have children who are boys. I am not an

expert but from what I know, meat plays no role in the gender of a child. Is it

possible that the people who are telling you this don't agree with your decision

to be vegetarian and may be trying to scare you into eating meat again?

God's Peace,

Gayle

that is so odd that people would say that! i have been vegetarian for ten

years. two years

ago i gave birth to my son. i can think of three long-term vegetarian friends

off the top of

my head that have sons.

there are plenty of vegetarian communes and societies that exist. it is not as

if they are

having only girls.

please do not listen to these people. they are obviously uneducated on this

topic.

Whoever told you that is stupid. The sex of your child is determined by the

chromosomes that come from the sperm. Some people believe that things like the

male drinking coffee before sex will speed the XY sperm up so that they get to

the egg quicker and things like that. I could see something like that working

in increasing odds of having a certain sex child. But once the baby is already

conceived it is what it is boy or girl. Nothing you could do could change that.

Oh so many old wives tales abt having boys and girls.

I am an avid vegetarian and have been for years. I

have one boy and another on the way. I imagine I feel

destined to only have boys, but the truth is, I can't

control that to a very big extent. The male is the one

who does the most dominant determination of sex for a

baby. If you want to increase your odds of getting

pregnant with a boy then you have to choose a proper

time for conception and hope your ph levels and his

male to female ratio is higher that day. Mostly you

can choose to induce conception when an ovulation

calendar shows you are most likely to produce a boy.

And cross your fingers bc/ well... you just never

know.

Hi,

I have been vegetarian all my life and have a son.My parents,

grandparents,...the whole family is vegetarian - no meat no fish. My

sis-in-law is pregnant and we are all hoping it would be a girl as there are

boys and boys everywhere in the family....

What you eat has no impact on what the sex of the baby would be. It is the

X or Y chromosome that comes from the dad that determines the sex of the

baby.

Good luck

I believe there is a very expensive process that involves spinning the sperm at

a high speed to separate the Xs and the Ys. Everything else is old " fish

tales " . If you want, can afford, and will love any baby, then have one.

" choosing " the sex of the baby by ph levels and date of conception is just

as much an old wives' tale. however " scientific " it may sound, whether a

baby is a boy or a girl is determined solely by genetics from the male

sperm.

although, i guess you could go for it anyway...you'd have about a 50% chance

of doing it right! :)

Jeni,

Genetics determines your babies sex.

I'm vegan and so is my husband and we have a boy. I teach childbirth

education and am a doula and many of my veg. and vegan clients have boys.

If you have questions about birth and vegan diet for pregnancy please feel

free to email me.

Peace,

I have heard that too -- I remember hearing there was a big study and

that wasn't actually intended to be part of the study, but the incidence

of vegetarian women having girls was so high they couldn't ignore it.

And then I went on to have 3 sons and no daughters! (after being

vegetarian for more than 10 years, and having a vegetarian husband).

I'm also a vegetarian and I have a son. Whoever told you that is just trying to

scare you. There's absolutely no truth to it. There are things you can do to

increase your chances of having a boy. One of the things I read was that you can

tie a string around one of your husband's testicles (I'm not sure which one) to

increase the chance of getting one gender or the other. Another thing is that X

(girl) sperm and Y (boy) sperm move at different speeds (I don't remember which

is faster), so depending on what point of your cycle you have sex it will

increase the likelihood of one gender or the other. I don't remember details on

these things, and I don't even know how much truth there is to them or any other

method of increasing the chances for one gender or another outside of conceiving

them in a petri dish and throwing all the female baby embryos in the trash.

Just go for a healthy baby! That's the most important thing. And if you end up

with another girl, you can save some money by re-using all your daughter's old

things. :)

wait, are you serious on that testicle thing? it sounds like a joke...a

really painful joke. on the speed thing - they have proven in several

laboratory studies that, on the cellular level, speed makes no difference in

sex conception. the female chromosome weighs more than the male - which

might account for there being slightly more women than men being born - but

again, there's nothing you can do to raise your chances.

here is an article about the study. it certainly does not show that vegetarians

don't have

boys! closer to 8 boys for every ten girls in the veg groups. i certainly

don't think it is

statistically strong enough to cause you to change your diet:

Vegetarian Mothers More Likely to Give Birth to Girls

(Source: Practising Midwife August, 2000)

A British study of how diet affects the health of new mothers and their babies

produced

the surprise finding that vegetarian women are more likely to have girls.

- Researchers monitored 5,942 pregnant women.

- Nearly 5% were vegetarian, a total of more than 250 women.

- They were mainly concerned with looking at things such as hemoglobin and birth

weights, but the difference in sex ratio they discovered was completely

unexpected.

- While the normal birth ratio in Britain is 106 boys born for every 100 girls,

in the

vegetarian women in the study, there were 81.5 boys born for every 100 girls.

- After finding these results, researchers decided to further test their

surprise findings by

extending their study for a further six months, looking exclusively at the sex

of babies.

- The results, covering about 150 more vegetarian women, were " just about

exactly the

same, " the study authors report.

- Previous studies have shown that diets high in potassium, calcium and

magnesium will

produce more male births, but there is no evidence that a vegetarian diet is low

in these

elements.

- Researchers suggest that a further study could be carried out to investigate

whether the

diet of fathers affects the sex of their children.

Hmm. It sure would be funny to convince a husband about the string thing. Hehe.

After having our daughter, my husband desperately wanted a son. I told him about

the string thing...

He then began thinking about how much fun it could be to have two girls. :)

As this thread has continued, I have become a bit disturbed about couples having

a gender preference. Don't we all just hope for healthy, happy babies?

Of course!! But with me and two daughters around, Jeff would be even more loony

than he is now. :) In all seriousness, either way he and I both would have been

very, very happy if Jeffery had been a girl. We planned to name a girl Mary. :)

Either way we'd have been very happy as long as the baby was healthy!

I read in a parenting magazine about people having lots of eggs fertilized in a

petri dish and sorting out the boys from the girls, and disposing of the embryos

that weren't the gender they wanted. That, in my opinion, is disgusting!!
