Don't feed bread to birds please ... it can swell up with water and hurt

their stomachs. Can even cause injury, if I recall correctly.

I thought it was only rice that shouldn't be fed to birds. I've never heard

that about bread. Interesting.

I thought the rice-thing was a myth. We give a little to our parakeet and have

never had a problem.

so what SHOULD we give to birds? we have a pond in our complex that my son

loves to visit to feed the ducks. we usually bring day-old white bread from

the reduced-price rack in albertson's. <ducks head>

actually, i've sort of been wondering what to do about that pond. it's

filled with greywater from the laundry room (there's actually a direct pipe

from the laundry room to the pond) and i see lots of pesticide run-off. i

feel so-o-o-o-o bad for those ducks. at least half of them are picked off

in mating season by cars. i saw one in the middle of the street yesterday.

i wsih they were just in some pond in the middle of nowhere where they

didn't have to worry about swimming in poison water, eating poison food,

getting hit by cars while they try to reproduce and having their nests

invaded by cruel children and crueler adults. i've been thinking about just

not feeding them anymore anyway because i feel likei'm just perpetuating the

cycle of keeping them here because of the free food.

Rice is fine for them, it's just an old myth invented by the people who had to

sweep the sidewalks after weddings. When it rained, rice would stick to the

sidewalks and it was very hard to sweep off. So they made up the story about how

rice kills birds so people would switch to bird seed instead, which was much

easier to sweep up than the rice.

Not that I'm a nerd or anything.
