ADD (long reply)

As a grad student in counseling, one of my interests is ADD. All of my in-laws

have it, and I have it too. I have done MUCH research on it. Through my course

of research, I have found several things that can possibly cause it, and thus

several solutions:

Lack of sleep--is he getting enough sleep at night? Most kids do not. Make

sure he is getting an average of 8-10 hours per night.

Poor nutrition--Haven't done much research here because most studies I have

read find that it is NOT a cause in ADD, but I keep hearing it anecdotally, so I

include it.

Family stress--this is a big one. If there is a lot of stress going on, or if

your marriage is tense, this can cause ADD symptoms in your kids, ironically

enough. Try to introduce some stress relieving activities, such as karate, fine

arts instruction (ie, music, painting, etc) if this could be the case.

Poor parenting skills--highly doubtful in your case. This includes lack of

consistent, loving discipline or abuse

Intelligence--boredom in school, for example. If he is okay in every

situation except for school, this is likely

Milk sensitivity--try cutting out milk and dairy products for a couple weeks

if you are not vegan

Chemical imbalance--this is a chicken or egg question. We don't know if a

chemical imbalance causes ADD or if the chemical imbalance is caused by ADD or

other environmental factors. Most doctors operate on this level, thus

prescribing medication.

Combination of factors--and thus a combination of solutions

Hope that helps!

I am the mother of a wonderful 2nd grade boy. I feel that nowadays

medicine is over prescribed. I have a very smart, caring, well behaved son,

however he is definitely all boy. His teacher this year is a little stricter &

much older than in previous years, and she is frustrated with how he needs

" prodding to focus " (in her words). I have a feeling someone is going to mention

" ADD " or something similar soon. Are there any natural remedies, foods, etc.

that you can recomend for a child to have better focus?

Thanks!

Wouldn't it be nice if whenever we messed up our life we could simply press 'Ctr

Alt Delete' and start all over?
