amy,

just so you know, the opinion that decreasing iron stores in breastmilk

spells anemia for a baby is an outdated idea. there is very little iron,

yes, but it is completely digestible, unlike fortifications or supplements

or even the iron in good healthy green foods. so do what you have to do to

get your baby at a healthy iron level, but don't discount your own

breastmilk as an integral part of raising and maintaining your son's iron

levels. breastmilk provides everything necessary for the first year of

life, including iron, even for preemies. i'm not saying to go against your

doctor's advice if she tells you that it's not enough, but if she is saying

that your breastmilk is at fault, make sure to do your research and bring it

to her attention if necessary. the discoveries about iron in breastmilk are

fairly recent and some doctors just may not be aware of it. i guess your

son is already anemic but like i said, your breastmilk is still important to

his iron levels; supplementation or fortified foods will never be able to

replace that perfect iron in your milk. anyway, good luck.
