1. What's the least refined sweetener you'd recommend? Molasses? Maple

syrup? Honey? Are they all basically the same? Do you find rice syrup

goes over well?

2. What are some easy recipes that your babies love? He insists that he

will feed himself so I'm especially interested in finger food ideas

(especially high protein ones), not spooned-in foods.

I'd suggest blackstrap molasses for the iron content, BUt only if baby is

over 12 mths. no baby under 12 mths should have honey or molasses due to the

possibility of botulism contamination.

easy finger foods? beans and peas are the easiest. chickpeas (you might want

to slip the skins off first), and kidney beans, and black beans are

favorites around here.

hummous, though messy, is a major favorite.

whole grain pancakes, cut up, I make lentils and cauliflower and broccoli

and carrots, then put them in the food processor with a little bread crumbs and

brewer's yeast, then fry em up like burgers.

the BESTY recipe book for little ones, IMO, is The Super Baby Food Book.

She has more recipes then you can manage to read! Food, drinks, even

playdoh. It's not exclusively veg, but 99.5% of it is, and she reiterates

constantly

that meat is not a good idea for anyone!

(my only beef with her is her info on breastfeeding is incorrect.)

Oh yeah, all of my kids love tofu scramble

what is everyone's favorite way to do a tofu scramble? we still eat eggs,

because I buy organic, cage free, vegetarian fed, etc., and beacause I like the

kids to have the brain fats. But, I'd love to have an alternative, just as a

change of pace.

oh, I forgot: My other big trick is the new protein filled, fiber filled

pasta... forgot the name of it, but it has flax seeds and extra protein...

I make that, and some homemade sauce (the trick is to puree veggies into the

sauce, so no picking happens!)

My also big trick is that I blanch a huge bunch of kale, puree it in a food

processor, and freeze it in ice cube trays every week or so... then everytime

I make anything like soup or sauce, I throw 4-5 cubes in for an extra kick of

iron and vitamins!
