Guest guest
I'm sure this is old news for some, but I recently canme across a book entitled, The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl, coyright 1966, and found it to be quite good. It's a story about a family of hunters who have the tables turned on them, and ultimately they learn a less about compassion. I think it's targeted for kids in the 7-9 year old range. I believe it's on video, too. It came as a pleaant surprise because it was mixed in with a box of misc. books given to my kids as a present from their omnivorous grandmother. I'm often disappointed with how so many kids books casually mention things eating animals. With my 4 year old, I'll change words (e.g., hamburget to veggie burger). And then last week, my 7 year old, who loves music class, comes home singing (and hasn't stopped since) a Carole King song about " chicken soup with rice " . I've tried to pursuade her to change the words to " vegetable soup with rice " , but ... well, that's not the way her teacher taught her. It can be an uphill struggle, huh? But we fight the good fight. - Alan
