Guest guest
I've always thought this was an interesting topic. I've been veg for about 14 years, but I always hated meat - my mom has pictures of me being forced to eat chicken when I was about 8, and it is not a pretty sight. But I do eat meat-analogues - not because they're " meaty " but because they're convenient. I mean, a frozen patty is a much easier thing to deal with than a bag of dried beans and a cup of rice. I tend towards the ones that look like, but don't taste like or have the texture of meat. In fact, my husband wasn't allowed to cook his veggie burgers in the house when I was pregnant because they smelled too meaty and made me hurl every time I smelled them. My husband, on the other hand, is mostly-veg-at-home-and-omni-out (really, there needs to be a word for that) and he chooses his meat substitutes based on how processed they are - the less like a natural food, the more he likes it. It's not what I would choose, but he did the same thing when he ate meat at home, so at least it's processed vegetable matter instead of processed animals. My daughter has never had meat, except for the one time she got into the catfood. Um. Anyway. Her favorite meal is still beans and rice, although seitan and peas is a close second. Meat analogues don't make up a large part of our diet, but when she does eat them, she's liked all the ones we've given her. And I don't think it's because they remind her of the catfood. I hope. So I think it depends on where you fall in the veg spectrum - I think some people are more naturally inclined to want meat than others, and those people will choose their meat analogues on different criteria than people who are more inclined to be veg. Oh, and speaking of things that taste like meat - I hope this won't offend anyone. I thought it was hilarious, but some have told me that my sense of humour is warped. http://www.eathufu.com/home.asp (The vegetarian human flesh alternative!) -kt
