Guest guest
Hi everyone. I'm an old member returning. . . long story. Anyway, one of my twin daughters has been struggling with allergeries. This has not been fun. We believe that she is allergic to wheat, gluten, and milk. Does anyone out there have a toddler that has been drinking rice milk? I'm concerned about the soy milk alternative because we are not sure if she is allergic to soy. Any thoughts on rice milk? Of course the doctor is concerned that she is not getting whole milk (the fat, of course). Thank you. Jenn in Michigan
Guest guest
oh boy...I'm digging into the deep recesses of my brain trying to remember the convos I've had w/people about this when our suddenly 6 yo's were toddlers.... i think the easiest answer is rice milk is ok w/not many reactions. i think you need to be aware of what rice milk doesn't have that regular milk does? calcium? i don't know much about rice milk. ummmm...i think goats milk was another alternative? unless there are vegan issues, of course. I want to say that I remember rice milk being mild & non system upsetting. feel free to tell me to shut up if I'm not rememebring correctly! good luck... Guest guest
Jenn, Being somewhat new to vegetarianism again and now having children I just bought a book of raising vegetarian children. I need to find it since I just went hog wild and bought a bunch of books. I have 3 children, 5, 3, and 1. I do remember reading somewhere about milk alternatives. The little bit I remember is rice and the nut milks are not adequate for smaller children because of their nutritional content. I am going to find the book and get back to you. It may take me a few days but I will get back to you. Debra M. clarinet_jenn <clarinet_jenn wrote: Hi everyone. I'm an old member returning. . . long story. Guest guest
Hi Jenn, I've got 2 boys allergic to dairy and they both drink rice milk. One has been drinking rice milk since he was 3, we buy the Rice Dream enriched b/c it has 30% calcium per serving. My youngest has been drinking rice milk since he was 10 months old (he is now 18 months old) due to reacting to all formula. It is not recommended to take a child off formula that early - BUT it was the lesser of the 2 evils. He is a good weight, very healthy and I recently had his iron checked and it's perfect. Despite the fact that our pedi about had a cow when I took him off of formula (I believe Mommy knows best) he has not at all failed to thrive, he's about perfect for his weight and height! yes, *Technically* it's not recommended to use rice milk in place of cows milk for young children b/c their bodies/brains need the fat in cows milk -- BUT that being said, it's technically unnatural for a child to drink cows milk anyhow b/c cows milk is for cows (and yes I do have 2 other children who do drink cows milk everyday, lol). When it comes to children w/ allergies - rice milk is perfectly acceptable. If your child can tolerate it, I suggest the enriched versions b/c they have more calcium. We also add a lot of good fats to my youngest's diet - like avocados and olive oil. He also takes a Berry Keen supplement (that we buy at Whole Foods) that has dha and ara and is basically cod liver oil (which you should absolutely discuss w/ your pedi in case of a fish allergy). Both of my youngest boys also take a daily vitamin (also bought at Whole Foods b/c that's the only place we can get dairy free ones). Some people go to Goats milk - but the proteins in Goats milk are pretty close to the proteins in cows milk (which is what causes the allergic reaction), and it's more expensive than rice milk. My 4 yr old can drink soy -- but my 18 month old cannot drink soy milk b/c he's allergic to soy also. It's common for a dairy allergic child to be be allergic to soy also (usually w/ the exception of soybean oil and soy lecithin since the proteins are removed), but not always. Good luck and hugs to you, food allergies are an learning process and frustrating journey!! If your dd ever needs an antibiotic, be sure to check on those also - a TON of them have dairy -- and almost all liquid antibiotics contain soy! --Stacee Mom to 4 kiddos dd 9 - allergic to penicillin, splenda ds 7 - allergic to splenda ds 4 - allergic to dairy ds 18 months - allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, chocolate (coccoa beans), red dye, watermelon , " clarinet_jenn " <clarinet_jenn wrote: > > Hi everyone.
