Every year my grandfather's friends used to give him morels. I went to high school in central Illinois for 2 years and one time a friend took me morel picking . We got a lot along the Illinois river bank and dried them. I think morels sauteed in butter are about the best food I can ever remember having. We take my son picking here in the fall (Sept.)and late summer (july and Aug.). My favorite ones here are Young puffballs (thetype that when they are old, kids step on them and the yellow spores make a big cloud); boletes, which are the type with the holes in the bottom instead of gills and shaggy manes, which are on that quiz.
