Guest guest
Hi GB, It all sounds a bit confusing to me. Do you know why stevia was previously banned? It makes me wonder if I would actually be prepared to use a product with so many question marks. I also see what you mean about technicalities. I had no idea that there was a difference between a food additive and a food supplement. Cheers from Marie Marie, The FDA did not exactly approve stevia in the US. For many years it was banned. You can get it in the US but you cannot sell or buy it as a sweetener. It's a kind of technicality. It can be sold as a food supplement but cannot be sold as anything associated with sweetness because that would put it in the category as a food additive. It's been used for thousands of years in South AMerica, I believe, but the plants are inconsistently sweet (one plant will be very sweet, others not much etc.), and the US is really big on lawsuits and such, so without much testing on it, they don't approve it. Plus, it's kinda hard to patent a naturally-growing plant, so it's not as lucrative as it could be either...
