Guest guest
About testing. Each individual is different and may require different needs. I have to test 5 times a day and use 5 shots per day, using 3 differen insuilins. My son is on the pills, not insulin, but is required to test 4 times per day. Guest guest
Hello John, Thank you so much for all your fabulous advice. At the moment everything is very new and confusing to me so to have this sort of information is just what I need. This sort of personal information is often more 'in touch' with reality than 'expert' information. I'm not saying for one moment that I wouldn't listen to medical and other professional advice, it's just that it is generalised and not geared to specific individuals. I think the way to go is to follow the professional advice but 'tweak' it along the way with tricks that work for you. Unfortunately I do not have a glucose monitor. I believe that in Holland these are only provided to insulin dependent diabetics and I am not on insulin. I also believe that the cost of purchasing your own meter and strips is quite prohibitive. I asked a friend of mine who is a clinic nurse and she told me that my blood glucose did not need to be tested so frequently. However, I am still a bit concerned that it will only be tested once a month when I visit the diabetes care nurse. Do you have a good website that you can recommend for GI information? As far as salt use goes, I use VERY little, if any, in cooking. I also try to avoid adding it to my food on the plate. Fortunately I really enjoy cooking and prepare 99% of our meals from scratch so I can carefully control what goes into them. Sauces and dressings are also no problem for me - I usually just use a little bit of lemon juice on my salads. If I am making a sauce for something like lasagne I use virtually no butter/margarine and use wholemeal flour and goat milk to try to keep the sauce as low-fat and high fibre as possible. We also only use wholemeal pasta, flour, bread etc so hopefully we are heading in the right direction. I have my first appointment with the dietician next Tuesday but, as you say, I have already found the most amazing diabetes support group and I am learning a tremendous amount from the members. Practical information from 'fellow travellers' is always a wonderful resource. Cheers from Marie
