We live in an apartment in Washington, DC. Gardening is not an

option, but I've always felt the need to surround myself with

plants. I have always intended to branch into the kitchen gardening

thing, but have not really mastered it.. I garden like I cook.. I

dabble, I enjoy it, I just go by feel... I don't know if that makes

sense to anyone else, but I enjoy it! lol

Anyway, this Christmas, my father-in-law was fond of the catalog

shopping. He sent me a portabella mushroom growing kit... I've yet

to tackle that thing.. his heart was in the right place, but it is

quite messy endeavor, that happened to arrive without instructions...

and leaking ...

He also sent some organic potted herbs. Three pots in a cozy woven

window basket. The lavender looks lovely, the Rosemary seems to be

thriving. All of the pots are too small and should be repotted. The

Chamomile never looked good. I thought this was simply due to over

crowded roots. I still haven't gotten around to repotting it... it

seemed to be doing okay for a little while... not really growing much

especially in comparison to the other two, but not yet dead...

A few days ago, I noticed that it seemed to hold the water much more

than the other two, and it seems to be struggling even more than

before. I took the pot out of the basket and put it my my kitchen

sink for closer observation.

It has been sitting there for a while... a few days at least. I was

letting it dry out a little, and the dead parts needed to be cleared

away to make room for new growth. (or at least that's what I was

thinking.. I told you.. I wing it!)

SO...

today, DISCOVERY!

I picked up the little plastic pot and thought the roots were growing

out the holes in the bottom. Upon closer inspection, these roots are

alive... and slimy, and moving...

we are now the proud owners of a slug plantation.... oh sorry.. an

ORGANIC slug plantation.

???what to do , what to do... ???

SOOO>> Jacob grabs some books, and we start reading about slugs.

Then on to google... we discovered this wonderful site (can you

believe I'm saying that about a site dedicated to slugs?? and better

yet.. to caring for slugs??? .. as pets??? !!!)

Gwendolyn and Jacob have already claimed which ones will be

" theirs " ... as if you can tell them apart!

so, once again (yes, again... about five years ago, I found myself

pouring over pounds of dirt trying to carefully, and lovingly,

separate the red wigglers from the compost before we moved... but

that's a whole other story)

so.. once again, I sit, searching through this organic dirt, careful

not to damage my precious and fragile chamomile plant which I'm

hoping to save, and at the same time trying to transplant these teeny

tiny slugs into their new make shift home, until such time as we can

prepare their proper terrarium. We have even found what we think

(and actually hope) to be slug eggs.

I am at least grateful that chamomile smells a heck of a lot better

than the compost and the red wigglers did!

Thanks Papa... for the gift that truly keeps on giving!

happy friday, may yours be full of surprises!

=) Jenni
