Ripe Melons, Cukes and Avocados

Do you know how to tell if a melon other than a watermelon is ripe?

Smell the end that was connected to the vine. If it smells like a ripe

mellon it is.

You are right about the watermelon. Works the same if you *thump* it.

There is a definite sound that is different when the watermelon is

ripe. You have to thump a few to recognize that sound..

I didn't know that about the avocado. I always buy them hard and leave

them out for a day or two to ripen. I will try that next time when I

need a ripe one right away. I also *score* my cukes but I use a fork

and make lots of marks down the sides..Looks so pretty when sliced.
