I grew up with this type cake but here it would be called a coffee cake.

Zwetschgendatschi (Plum Cake)

1 stick butter, softened

1/3 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1 large egg

1 tbl. sour cream or plain yogurt

1 teaspoon grated lemon rind

1 3/4 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

2 full cups plums, pit and sliced in thin slices (don't peel)

Preheat oven 375F.

In large bowl cream butter and sugar until fluffed.

Add vanilla, egg and sour cream and mix well.

Mix flour and baking powder together in small bowl.

Now add the flour mixture to wet mixture slowly and beat until all

blended.

Grease round cake pan or square brownie pan and spread dough over bottom.

Decorate the top with the plums (they shrink up when baking).

Bake for 30 to 45 minutes. Keep checking after 30 minutes and insert

toothpick to see if it comes out clean.

Optional: You can put this topping on cake before you bake if you like to:

Cream 6 tbls. butter with 3/4 cup flour, 1/3 cup sugar

and one teaspoon cinnamon. Spread this on top of plums before you bake. This

is optional, I don't usually make the topping but some people really like it,

mostly the kids do.
