I cook from scratch, buy all my beans, grains and rice from the bulk bins, now I

cook all the tops from radishes , beets and celery too. Any extra ripe or

leftover bananas, strawberries, zucchini or carrots go into a breads or a

crockpot of soup. I make most of my veggie burgers and the loaves from the

files to go with dinner and use for sandwiches the next day. I like to drink

fruit flavored sun tea or lavender tea I make by the pitcher. I know my grocery

bill is very low. When you start adding the frozen meals, chips, snacks and

crackers it really adds up. I pretty much avoid those.

I think that being veg can actually be cheaper, but not if you're

buying lots of processed foods to suppplement your diet. veggies,

rice, etc are cheap. It's the weeks when I decide to buy crackers and

cereal and soy burgers and premade soups that the bill is outrageous,

um, also those organic strawberries really run up the tab : )

maybe being veg sounds difficult and exotic to some people....there is

still the notion floating around that you have to make sure you

get " complete' proteins, etc.

just my take...melissa p
