Guest guest
a two-part post. 1) i am moving to a new apartment, and am going to be buying new pots and pans. does anyone have a favourite brand? i figure i've been buying (and replacing) the cheap crap for so long, i should just bite the bullet and buy something of excellent quality that will actually last me a long time. i was considering the set that they sell on the vitamix website (http://www.vitamix.com/household/products/neova/). i looooooove my vitamix, so i figure their other products will be of similar quality. any thoughts? 2) i'm going to not one, but two potlucks on saturday, one right after the other. i have a 9am client and have to leave right from there, so i will either have to wake up early to cook or make everything the night before. the first is a big picnic, and the second one is a friend's birthday. i will most likely be the only vegan at both. i had been considering making a huge sub sammitch (tofurkey, soylami, mustard, pepperoncini, romaine, sundried tomatoes...) for the picnic and a mocha cream pie for the birthday, but i'm not sure how they'd go over (esp. the sammitch). any thoughts? muchos thankyouos! melody http://www.flawlessfitness.com http://www.melodysmusic.net
Guest guest
I'll tell you what my friend the chef told me when I decided to buy some high-quality pots and pans: go to Marshall's or TJ Maxx and look in their pots and pans department. Look for heavy-bottomed steel. He said to avoid things with a teflon coating- high quality steel will not need a coating. You will find a lot of seconds and damaged pieces at those stores, so examine every piece carefully before you buy. I bought some really nice pots there, for much less than I would have spent elsewhere. One brand I ended up with was " Authentic Kitchen " ; I can't remember the other and the mark was on the tag, not the pot. Be warned: the really good steel these days is scratchable (at least, the finish is), so you can't use metal utensils on it. Wood, plastic, nylon, or silicone utensils only. He was right- I do not have a problem with food sticking. And to me, the sammitch sounds great - priscilla nadiana1 wrote: a two-part post. Oh let's see... While i still have so many " cheap crap " pots and pans i am working on phasing them out gradually, as my budget allows. i have been replacing them with Tramontina ¨. > 2) i'm going to not one, but two potlucks on saturday, one right after the > other. i have a 9am client and have to leave right from there, so i will > either have to wake up early to cook or make everything the night before. the > first is a big picnic, and the second one is a friend's birthday. i will most > likely be the only vegan at both. i had been considering making a huge sub > sammitch (tofurkey, soylami, mustard, pepperoncini, romaine, sundried > tomatoes...) for the picnic and a mocha cream pie for the birthday, but i'm not sure > how they'd go over (esp. the sammitch). any thoughts? Yum, both sound wonderful. i might also suggest a marinated bean salad or pasta salad for the potluck. That way you can fix it the day before and let the flavors mingle in your frige overnight. Both are yummy served at room tempurature so if you don't have a cooler handy you won't have to worry about them going bad. Have a great time at both gatherings! ~ pt ~ The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who dont have it. ~ George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)
Guest guest
hi melody, my grandparents gave me an expensive set of calphlon pots and pans when i graduated college and to tell you the truth i am not in love with them. they are heavy and clumsy and hard to clean. i don't recommend spending the money for them. i had a fairly inexpensive set of revere pots and pans before that and thought they were fine. i gave them to my younger brother when i got the calphlon set and kinda regret doing so. now, in addition to the calphlon pans, i use pots and pans from amway and a cast iron skillet most often i inherited them from my great grandmother. susie --- nadiana1 wrote: > 1) i am moving to a new apartment, and am going to > be buying new pots and > pans. does anyone have a favourite brand? i > figure i've been buying (and > replacing) the cheap crap for so long, i should just > bite the bullet and buy > something of excellent quality that will actually > last me a long time. i was > considering the set that they sell on the vitamix > website > (http://www.vitamix.com/household/products/neova/). > i looooooove my vitamix, so i figure their > other products will be of similar quality. any > thoughts? Guest guest
I've been to many events over the years that required taking a dish so I can relate as a Vegan. There are many Vfoods available it's much easier to fool the pallette than it used to be. Altho I will say this....don't spend anymore than necessary on it and make sure they know it's a vegetarian dish...if not you will see raised eyebrows when they taste it as a polite pushing it aside on the plate. When children are present it's usually the verbal " UGH!! " . You have to laugh but at the same time you watch your nice dish either sit there untouched or wasted by plates of it going in the trash. Your idea of a sub is great.. however you might want to just make it a Veggie sub using Soycheese on it. Don't forget tho the bread will be soggy if made the night before. Best to take the ingredients and assemble it at the event. The pie sounds yummy...doubt there will be any problems there! Good luck!! I don’t have a particular favourite brand, but I’ll echo what others said – good lids, welded handles, and most importantly HEAVY bottom. And no non-stick coating, because good pots will clean easily enough without that. When invited to picnics/BBQ’s, I tend to bring a crockpot full of baked beans. No one even really thinks about the fact that they’re vegetarian/vegan because they’re such a common picnic item. My recipe for them is in the files section, but you need about 24 hrs (or more) to make them so this may be too late. The good thing about making them in the crockpot is that you just fill it up and then forget about it. The crock keeps them reasonably warm for transport, but baked beans are good served room temp as well. The sandwich sounds yummy, and I’d enjoy it, but I don’t know about other people. A lot of my friends kind of cringe at the thought of soy “meats” and won’t even try them. As for the pie...post the recipe! Or better yet, bring it to my house and let the bday folks eat cake *grin* Good luck with the move. -- Sherri If you think sex is a pain in the ass, try different position. _____ --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
