Guest guest
I used to be a heavy milk on cereal person, but soy was less of an adjustment than I thought (the chocolate version's actually better, imho), I like it a lot, and yes there are cheese alternatives of greater and lesser similarity. I sometimes use them, but there's a lot of good stuff besides. But I think it helps to give the question a slightly different spin. One, as I learned more about dairy, I sort of lost a lot of the taste for it, kind of like drinking flat soda and winceing to realize how much sugar you normally ingest in the stuff. Keeping the animal/product link helps I think. And two, I discovered how overfed I was on the stuff before, discovering the rich world of alternative foods I was missing out in its place. The rest of the world has some very creative and palatable alternatives to explore too. One quick $.02 anyway. , RMS <rmshore@s...> wrote: > I have a general question to ask anyone who wants to answer me; how do I give up milk and cheese? I love milk and drink at least two glasses a day and lord knows my love affair with cheeses, all kinds. Is there any products out there that are more milk like than others? Are there any 'fake' cheeses out there that don't taste like oil and have some favor to them? Okay, I have only gone completely veg a couple of months ago, but I would like same day to take the next step and become vegan, therefore I want to get more information as I mentally get ready. Guest guest
Substitution is the key, at first; (nowadays i eat dairy substitutes only occassionally as a special treat). Experiment with different brands of soymilk. Silk is very popular, but I find it somewhat bitter (esp. the chocholate). My favorite is Vitasoy and IMHO it has a fairly similar taste / consistancy to cow milk. Other brands (i.e. Westsoy) tend to be thinner or have an aftertaste. Nothing will taste exactly like dairy so keep that in mind, it make take awhile for your tastebuds to adjust. There are some really great soy ice creams and sorbet out there too. My fav is SoyDream. As for cheese, the only thing that really cuts it for me is " Follow your heart " vegan gourmet cheese. If you can't find it at your local healthfood store, you can order it on www.imearthkind.com It is the only vegan cheese I've found that really melts. If you can't afford this, you might just have to try pizza, lasanga, etc. cheese. You'll be surprised after awhile how it isn't missed if you have other tasty ingredients. The other thing is, although you may prefer to gradually reduce your dairy consumption, eventually you will just have to go for it, " cold turkey " . Even if you only ate products with a small amount of dairy in them, you'll never rid yourself of your craving (read: addiction) for dairy because there are opiods in casein (milk protein). A lot of soy cheese and meat alternatives out there have casein or whey in them. As for your nutrition, make sure you get b12 whether you get it in a vitamin or spirulina supplement or in fortified soymilk. Goodluck! > > , RMS <rmshore@s...> wrote: > > I have a general question to ask anyone who wants to answer me; how > do I give up milk and cheese?
